Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, in Mattancherry, Kochi, features Kerala murals
depicting Hindu temple art, portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi. Mattancherry Palace with its
medieval charm is situated at Palace Road, Mattancherry, Kochi. It was built by the Portuguese and
presented to Veera Kerala Varma (1537–65), Raja of Kochi, in 1555 AD.The palace is a quadrangular
structure built in Nālukettu style, the traditional Kerala style of architecture, with a courtyard in the middle.
In the courtyard there stands a small temple dedicated to ‘Pazhayannur Bhagavati’, the protective
goddess of the Kochi royal family. There are two more temples on either side of the Palace, one
dedicated to Lord Krishna and the other to Lord Siva. Certain elements of architecture, as for example the

The Kerala houseboats of today are used for leisure trips, but in old days, these Kettuvalloms (kerala
houseboats) were used for commercial purpose. The original Kettuvalloms (kerla houseboat) were used
to carry tonnes of rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port. But due to the large influx of modern
day transport facilities, these Kerala Houseboats revived themselves as a luxurious entity.
The Kerala houseboat is a giant country crafts, measuring up to 100 feet in length, retrieved from being
lost to the State altogether. Once they ruled the backwaters, poled along by one or two men, heavily
loaded with rice, coconut and other commodities. But in the recent times, the kettuvalloms (kerala
houseboats) have been replaced by more and modern modes of transport, relegating them to neglect and
decay. It takes great skill and meticulousness to construct these giant Kerala Houseboats by tying huge
planks of jack wood together. Curiously enough, not a single nail is used in their making of a houseboat.
There used to be an entire clan of artisans who were involved in kettuvallom construction. Today, an
innovative holiday idea has restored these majestic representatives of a unique culture and with kerala
houseboat their makers.
